Chapter Nine

Jake didn’t care who was making the loud rapping noise or calling his name. They’d interrupted the dream he was having about kissing Fred, among other things, and would suffer some claw action, or at the very least, a well-placed smack to the side of their head.

As far as he was concerned, having a pillow careen off his face was enough to end someone’s life. With a snarl, Jake forced his eyes open and spotted Braden standing in the doorway, searching for something else he could throw. Not that Jake blamed him. His cousin had learned the hard way not to stand too close if he was going to wake him up before he was ready to get out of bed.

“Are you planning on getting up some time today?” Braden asked, leaning against the frame.

If Braden was there pestering him, then there was a good chance Jake had overslept. A glance at his alarm clock confirmed that he had twenty minutes before he was supposed to head out on the trail ride with Kelsey and some of the guests.

“Maybe,” Jake growled, then whipped back the comforter and pushed out of bed. There wasn’t enough time for a shower, so getting dressed, combing his mussed hair, and brushing his teeth would have to suffice. It also meant skipping breakfast and missing out on seeing Fred, which added to his already surly mood. He grabbed a shirt and a pair of pants from the closet and headed for the bathroom.

Most of Jake’s exhaustion stemmed from staying up past midnight. He’d spent his time searching for the perfect greenhouse design. In the end, he’d compiled several different layouts into one that he thought Fred would like. He’d also found some spare lumber and planned to check with Casey to make sure she didn’t have a problem with him using it. Whatever he couldn’t find lying around, he’d order later today.

Before that, he’d covertly tracked Conrad, which was uneventful since the male retired to his cabin shortly after leaving the dining hall. Jake could understand the wolf’s interest in Fred if he’d been a regular guest and had interacted with her in a normal manner. He didn’t believe in coincidences, and several things about the male didn’t make sense. The first was showing up at a secluded ranch without a reservation.

None of the sisters could shift, but they all had shifter blood and could sense things that most humans couldn’t. After Kelsey caught the aftermath of Jake kissing Fred, she’d tracked him down and told him how Conrad had made her uneasy from the moment he’d entered the lodge. So much so that she’d made sure to tell Jake about Conrad’s immediate interest in Fred when he’d first arrived.

Not only was the male paying extra attention to Jake’s mate, but he’d ignored the sign preventing guest access to the kitchen to do it. The information he received from Kelsey increased his wariness and prompted the additional surveillance.

Even if Jake hadn’t noticed Fred’s discomfort around Conrad, he still would’ve sought him out.
